The sound-editing teams behind Steve McQueen‘s 12 Years a Slave and Alfonso Cuaron‘s Gravity earned three nominations apiece — the most in the feature competition — for the The Motion Picture Sound Editors’ 61st annual Golden Reel Awards, which will be handed out Feb. 16 at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel.
Several films were close behind with two nominations each, including American Hustle, Captain Phillips, Frozen, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, Inside Llewyn Davis and Lone Survivor.
12 Years a Slave and Gravity both earned their nominations in the same three categories, for sound effects and foley, dialogue and ADR, and music.
Nominees in the sound-editing category for an animated feature are the teams behind Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2, The Croods, Despicable Me 2, Epic, Ernest & Celestine, Frozen, Monsters University and Planes.
During the Golden Reel Awards, MPSE will honor James Cameron with its Filmmaker Award and Skywalker Sound’s two-time Oscar-winning sound designer/rerecording mixer Randy Thom with its Career Achievement Award.
The list of feature nominees follow, while the nominees in the rest of the categories will be announced Friday.
