BERLIN – Bobcat Goldthwait, the 1980s stand-up legend and indie comedy director, will serve as the jury president at this year’s Oldenburg International Film Festival.
Oldenburg, which fashions itself as Germany’s answer to Sundance, will also screen a retrospective of Goldthwait’s work, including his latest film as a director, Willow Creek, which will have its European premiere in Oldenburg. The fest will also screen Goldthwait’s bestiality-themed romantic comedy Sleeping Dogs Lie (2006) and World’s Greatest Dad (2009), starring Robin Williams.
A pioneer of America’s vibrant alternative comedy scene in the 1980s, whose high-pitched squeaky voice became his trademark, Goldthwait was a bit player in several films, most memorably as Zed in Police Academy 2, 3 and 4.
Goldthwait reinvented himself as a cult comedy director in 1991 with Shakes The Clown. The film, hailed by the Boston Globe as the “Citizen Kane of evil clown films,” cemented Goldthwait’s reputation and helped lead to gigs directing TV, including episodes of Chappelle’s Show, Jimmy Kimmel Live! and, most recently, the IFC comedy series Maron.
As jury president in Oldenburg, Goldthwait will help choose Oldenburg’s top German Independence Award.
Other members of the jury include veteran production lawyer Ken Meyer, who has worked on such films as Steven Soderbergh’s Side Effects and Magic Mike (2012); director Douglas Buck (2006’s Sisters); Premium Films distribution executive Kasia Karwan and Korean singer-songwriter My-Yung Park.
The 20th Oldenburg Film Festival runs Sept. 11-15.
