Hyphen Magazine: Fast for families and immigration reform passes baton to 7 activists

Statue of LibertyFour immigrant right activists who have been fasting for 22 days to bring attention to immigration reform ended their fast today, but seven other civil rights leaders announced they would begin theirs.

Hyphen Magazine reports that Eliseo Medina of SEIU, Dae Joong Yoon of NAKASEC (National Korean American Service & Education Consortium), Cristian Avila of Mi Familia Vota and Lisa Sharon Harper of Sojourners had abstained for food since November 12. They vowed to fast in front of the Capitol Building in Washington, DC until they couldn’t physically continue.

At a news conference, the four announced their Fast for Families would be picked up by seven civil rights leaders including Dolores Huerta of the United Farm Workers, Baptist minister Rev. Al Sharpton, and Chiara Taylor of the Dream Defenders .

The Immigration Bill has been stalled in the House where Speaker John Boehner has refused to bring the bill up for a vote and has said no action would be taken this year.

“I’ve joined the fast to urge leaders in the House of Representatives to end people’s suffering and the pain of family separation,” said NAKASEC’s Yoon.  “Children are going to bed crying and missing their mothers who have been deported.”
