It may just be every parent’s dream: Knowing where your child is. And, it just got a little easier for parents with kids in the Folsom-Cordova Unified School District.

“Technology is helping us do all of our work better,” says Stephen Nichols with Folsom-Cordova Unified School District.

Each and every student who rides the bus will soon get an electronic bus card with a barcode.

“It’s almost like sliding a credit card. They just slide it through here, that little slot there,” says Barbara Terry, transportation supervisor.

The school district spent more than a quarter of a million dollars on a system that will enable them to monitor students as the travel to and from school. The technology was installed on every single one of the 71 buses owned by the district.

“A parent can call and say did my student get off the bus? We know whether or not they got on,” Terry says.

And the new technology doesn’t stop there. Terry shows us another new software installed, allowing her to track bus routes, live.

“It tells me everything that the bus did,” says Terry.

“I think in the info age parents want to know where their kids are at all times. We can find that info for them much quicker,” says Nichols.

But the district says these new systems are not a way for parents to track their children from a remote access point.

“If parents are curious, they should call us and we can help them. We now can better serve them with real time information,” says Nichols.
