Woodward Tahoe Director Phoebe Mills is an Olympic judge in snowboarding

Phoebe Mills, the director of Woodward Tahoe at Boreal Mountain Resort in Nevada County and a 1988 Olympic bronze medalist in gymnastics, is working in Sochi as a judge for snowboard’s halfpipe and slopestyle.

Mills, 41, is the only American on the six-judge panel that will score the halfpipe and slopestyle competitions at the 2014 Sochi Games.

Mills won the only U.S. gymnastics medal at the 1988 Olympics. She began coaching snowboarding in the ’90s. She has tutored Olympic medalists Hannah Teter and Danny Kass, among others.

Before Sochi, Mills judged the Grand Prix Olympic qualifier contests at Copper and Mammoth. She is now director of Woodward Tahoe.

“It’s a huge honor to judge the Olympics,” she told ESPN. “There are a lot of great judges who want to do that, both in the U.S. and around the world. So I want to do it right and do it justice.”

“I can’t think of anyone more qualified. She has such a diverse background with a really unique set of skills and life experiences,” Mike Jankowski, the head coach of the U.S. Snowboarding and U.S. Freeskiing halfpipe and slopestyle teams, told the Denver Post. “She’s the most fair and most knowledgeable person we could have out there.”
