Google celebrated the birthday of Malaysian filmmaker Yasmin Ahmad with a doodle on Tuesday. The local version of the search giant’s homepage showed an illustration echoing the visual style of her celebrated 2004 film Sepet.
In a statement, Google Malaysia’s head of communications Zeffri Yusof said the doodle “commemorates the life and work of Yasmin Ahmad, who sought to bring together Malaysians of every gender, ethnicity and persuasion.”

Ahmad, who died at the age of 51 in 2009 after suffering a stroke, directed just five films, but was a well known figure in Malaysia, in part because of a popular series of award-winning commercials she directed for Petronas, the national oil and gas company.
The film highlighted by Google is representative: A love story about a Chinese boy and a Malay girl, Sepet bridged the conservative country’s cultural divide with a heartwarming story, and won the Best Asian Film award at the Tokyo International Film Festival in 2005.
