NATOMAS-

It is a peaceful area, surrounded by homes and working families, but one north Natomas neighborhood has not had much to look at other than an empty field that has become more of a nuisance.

“Right now it is a big weed patch with dirt. You get a lot of rats and raccoons. They come from out of the country,” said resident Gary Gordon.

After six years of planning, Sacramento City Council has chosen a developer to build Wild Rose Park on the 9.6 acre lot.

During Thursday’s city council meeting, members will grant just over $2.1 million to Peterson Development for the project.

The park will include a nature-themed children’s playground, two basketball courts, a baseball field and a community garden.

“I am very excited,” resident Melissa Brown said. “I do not have kids, but I have dogs. I very much would like to take my dogs over there.”

With many families living in the area, residents say the park will be a big benefit for kids who are currently limited to playing in the grass or street.

“It is really quiet. No one comes out,” Gordon said. The problem is, there is nowhere for the kids to play.”

“They will be able to walk to the park instead of having to drive,” said Brown.

The new park is expected to be completed by fall.
