STOCKTON –
Members from Women’s Center Family and Youth Services handed out flyers at Delta College on Thursday to spread awareness on sexual assaults.
“Sexual assault can include rape or forcing someone to do any sexual activity by force or against their will or by using coercion,” said Lisa Jordan with the Women’s Center.
No rapes have been reported on campus, but in the last couple of months, district police alerted students to two unwanted sexual incidents.
In one of them, a woman says a man came up to her and tried to unbuckle her belt and kiss against her will.
In the other, a man was touching himself while following a group of girls.
Officers are stepping up security.
“We have cameras but we’re upgrading them and getting better views better cameras,” said Susan McAnelly, a crime prevention officer with San Joaquin Delta College Police Department.
The police department also offers private security services.
They are also trying to get to the root of the problem and change the way people think too.
“We’re trying to make people aware of what’s acceptable and what’s not,” said McAnelly.
Jordan thinks her organization’s work educating students is helping.
“The culture of the college campuses has been increasing awareness of sexual assault issues in the last few years I’ve noticed, especially with so much attention being placed on sexual assault,” said Jordan.
