RIO VISTA–

64-year-old Van Chanpenxi loves fishing the Delta. And on a good day, his wife Chantra, 51, comes with him.

This Thursday started out as a good day.

“I was just calling to say hi, and it was Thanksgiving and everything was fine,” said the couple’s son Jim Chanpenxi.

Jim’s talking about the last conversation he had with his parents, as they were fishing, just after noon Thanksgiving day.

“Their clothes were inside the boat, outer clothing jackets and what have you. There were fish inside the boat. Obviously they were fishing. We just don’t know what happened to them,” said Sgt. Lisa Bowman of the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department.

The Coast Guard found the couple’s boat just north of the Rio Vista Bridge. The boat was still running, going around and around in a circle — but, there was no one inside.

“It’s hard. But we still try to be positive. Hopefully they come home. Maybe they’re okay still,” Jim Chanpenxi said.

In the four days since the Chanpenxi’s went missing, their family, friends, the sheriff’s department and the Coast Guard all have been searching the Delta waters for any sign. So far, no luck.

“That’s what’s killing us right now. Not knowing is probably the hardest thing,” Jim Chanpenxi said.
