Berlin — Sini Anderson’s documentary The Punk Singer about legendary frontwoman Kathleen Hanna is to rock and roll into British cinemas after inking a deal with Dogwoof.
The Punk Singer is a documentary about Bikini Kill and Le Tigre front woman, creator of the Riot Grrrl movement and feminist icon Hanna.
Anderson uses interviews with Hanna cut in with footage and music from the bands, as well as interviews with fellow musicians including Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth, Adam Horowitz from the Beastie Boys and Joan Jett, to create a portrait of the unique and revolutionary artist.
The deal was brokered by Dogwoof head of distribution Oli Harbottle with Autlook Films managing director Salma Abdalla on behalf of international sales agent Films Transit.
The film is set for U.K. theatrical release May 2014, Dogwoof said.
“We’re very much looking forward to releasing The Punk Singer alongside Kathleen Hanna’s return to the U.K. with the Julie Ruin tour in late May – the film’s documenting of this remarkable woman and the Riot Grrrl scene will no doubt go on to inspire a whole new audience in addition to the existing fanbase,” said Harbottle.
Anderson said her biggest hope when making the film was that it “would end up in the right hands, with people that I feel truly get the art, the politics and the vision. I’m thrilled to put my film in the hands of Dogwoof.”
Abadalla added: “The Punk Singer is much more than a music documentary. Kathleen Hanna´s powerful biography is a political feminist statement. Dogwoof is the perfect match, they are experienced with pulsating music films at the same time they know how to market the political layer of the film.”
