Disney is pushing back the release of animated tentpole The Good Dinosaur by nearly 18 months, from May 30, 2014, to Nov. 25, 2015, leaving Pixar without a film next year. That means Finding Dory won’t open until June 17, 2016.
The shift comes several weeks after Good Dinosaur director Bob Peterson exited the project. With the filmmaker’s departure, insiders say Pixar realized the movie wouldn’t have been on time.
Next year will be the first time since 2005 — before Disney brought the animation giant — that Pixar hasn’t had a film.
As a result of Good Dinosaur‘s relocation, Angelina Jolie‘s live-action fairy tale Maleficent is moving up from July 2, 2014, to Good Dinosaur‘s old date of May 30. Disney likes the date because it gets Jolie’s film somewhat out of the way of soccer’s World Cup, which runs June 12 to July 13. It’s also now out of the way of the second weekend of Transformers: Age of Extinction. In turn, there’s now a spot opened up over the lucrative July Fourth weekend.
Pixar’s high-profile sequel Finding Dory had occupied the Nov. 25, 2015, date; now it won’t open until June 17, 2016 — opposite DreamWorks Animation’s How to Train Your Dragon 3 in an animation showdown.
Disney made a number of other schedule changes, including announcing that Bill Condon‘s The Fifth Estate will now skip a limited launch on Oct. 11, 2013, and open nationwide on Oct. 18.
Kevin Costner‘s cross-country running drama McFarland has gotten a high-profile release date of Nov. 21, 2014.
