All Anais Celini wanted to do was attend prom with her partner of two years, Nathaniel Baez. But when school officials at Martin Luther High School in New York found out that Baez, who had graduated from the same school the year before, was transgender, they refused the couples' entry, citing school policy that same-sex couples aren't allowed to attend. Celini and Baez, however, aren't a same-sex couple because Baez identifies as male and, as Celini told WPIX, would have legal documents that identified Baez as such by the time prom happened. School officials wouldn't budge, stating that Baez's transition was "unconventional" and unwelcome at the prom. Of all the things to worry about at prom (including people bringing a leaf blower, which happened at mine), two kids who want to dance the night away in celebration of a long time spent together isn't it.

The couple, who had both been kicked out of their homes after coming out, saw prom as an end to challenging times. Celini told WPIX that she could have bought a ticket for a friend and then just brought Baez, but both partners thought that this would be dishonest and disrespectful to Baez's journey and identity. Look at the value system on these kids! Ugh, this entire thing just makes you want to yell at the school and then also offer to throw Celini and Baez their own prom (all it takes is a backyard and a boombox). It gets better, you guys!
