A version of this story first appeared in the Feb. 21 issue of The Hollywood Reporter magazine.
Beverly Hills’ power-lunch mecca Barney Greengrass, which ranked No. 3 on THR’s most recent annual Power Lunch survey, is being phased out of its fifth-floor perch at Barneys New York, THR has learned. The store has quietly removed the name that had been licensed from the iconic Manhattan deli; it’s now simply Barneys New York Restaurant. And the menu has even gone treyf, with the addition of pork (on a BLT) and shellfish.

“The Jews on Pico are rioting,” a waiter joked to THR on Feb. 6. In May, it will close for a three-month renovation, emerging as an outpost of Freds, the store’s restaurant at its Chicago and New York locations (DreamWorks CEO Stacey Snider and Joan Rivers have been seen at the latter spot). Don’t stress, though: The smoked fish selection from its longtime purveyor is expected to remain on the menu.
Barney Greengrass did not return a request for comment. On Feb. 13, after this story was first published, a Barneys spokesperson officially confirmed the changeover plans, noting they are part of the Beverly Hills store’s ongoing multi-year renovations and that Mark Strausman, executive chef and managing director of the other Freds outposts, will be in charge of the transformation of the dining space.
