High-level Meetings of the 68th Session of the General Assembly

Disability and development -- "The way forward: a disability inclusive development agenda towards 2015 and beyond", 23 September 2013

Why a high level meeting?

While the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) represent a concerted effort to address global poverty, there is a striking gap in the current MDGs and their inclusion of persons with disabilities.

The estimated one billion people worldwide who live with disabilities are still excluded from equitable access to resources (education, healthcare, etc.) and as a result persons with disabilities experience disproportionately high rates of poverty.

In spite of the adoption of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in 2006, disability remains largely invisible in most mainstream development processes.

A visual identity created for the High-level meeting of the General Assembly on disability and development with the text 'Break Barriers: Open Doors' that also includes symbols of a key and keyhole.

Stevie Wonder's call for action

Stevie Wonder calls on support for the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities to be "signed, sealed and delivered by all countries, for everyone's sake".
