Ethan Hawke has signed on to reteam with writer-director Michael Almereyda for a modern-day adaption of Shakespeare’s Cymbeline.
The two worked together on Almereyda’s 2000 version of Hamlet.
Cymbeline unfolds as an epic battle between dirty cops and a drug-dealing biker gang set in a corrupt 21st century America. The project is described as a fresh take on a universal story of love, betrayal and revenge that is in the vein of Sons of Anarchy and in the style of Romeo + Juliet.
Anthony Katagas (12 Years a Slave, The Immigrant) is producing alongside Michael Benaroya (Margin Call, Kill Your Darlings), who is fully financing the film through his Benaroya Pictures banner. Benaroya’s Ben Sachs is executive producing.

CAA, which reps Hawke, is handling domestic rights to the film. International Film Trust, Benaroya’s foreign sales arm, will handle international. Head of sales Christian De Gallegos will begin introducing the project to buyers.
In addition to Hamlet, Almereyda’s credits include the vampire indie Nadja and Mon Amour, starring Christopher Eccleston and Elisabeth Moss.
Hawke most recently starred in The Purge and Before Midnight. He returns to the stage in November in the Lincoln Center Theatre’s production of Macbeth, directed by Jack O’Brien.
