SACRAMENTO-

Matthew Sutherland is an avid golfer but he’s been bedridden with the flu for the last week.

“It threw my game off. I had a 103 temperature,” he said.

The 13-year-old never got he flu vaccination, and, he paid the price for it.

“I was hallucinating,” Sutherland told FOX40.

By Wednesday, he was better and made an appointment with pediatrician Dr. Richard Gould, in hopes of getting the vaccination.

“I don’t want the flu again. No way,” Sutherland said.

But, Sutherland didn’t get the flu shot Wednesday, at least not in Gould’s office.

“It’s important to know that sometimes when we are in the middle of an epidemic, the vaccines might not be readily available,” Gould said. He says he has about 20 flu shots available for children ages 3 and up.

But all of those are already scheduled.

“We ordered thousands of shots before the flu season and we ran out,” he told FOX40 Wednesday.

As for kids, the Sacramento City Unified School District’s policy on illness is clear cut.

“If you are sick, stay home,” district Health Coordinator Pam Whipple. “It’s pretty simple advice you can follow every day.”

Whipple told FOX40 the district has not seen an increased amount of flu related cases this year.

“But, we have seen more and more concerned parents, asking a lot of questions,” Whipple said.

The county told FOX40 Wednesday there is no way to accurately estimate that number of available flu vaccines left within the region.
