Marking the first nationwide release of 2014, Paramount‘s Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones took in $1.2 million as it began rolling out in theaters Thursday night, coinciding with a bad snow storm in the Northeast.
By way of comparison, Paramount’s horror pic The Devil Inside earned $2 million in Thursday night shows a year ago on its way to a $33.7 million opening.
The Latino-themed Marked Ones isn’t expected to reach those same levels since it is competing with a crowded crop of carryover Christmas titles (this weekend is essentially considered the end of the holidays).

Holdovers Frozen — which continued to top the box office Thursday — and The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug are expected to stay in the No. 1 and No. 2 spots, while The Marked Ones will compete with fellow Paramount pic The Wolf of Wall Street and Sony’s American Hustle for No. 3.
Costing $5 million to make, The Marked Ones hopes to launch its own franchise. Produced by Jason Blum and Oren Peli, the film stars Andrew Jacobs, Jorge Diaz and Gabrielle Walsh.
Written and directed by Christopher Landon, The Marked Ones explores the effects of demon possession and the cultural history of black magic rituals used to fight it.
