A member of the California National Guard was sentenced Thursday for stealing a pair of M4 machine guns from the National Guard’s armory in Lodi.

Stephen Gooden, 40, of Stockton was sentenced by US District Judge Morrison C. England Jr. to one year in prison and a fine of $1,000 for possessing a machine gun.

Gooden and 28-year-old Luis Castro, of Sacramento, were members of the California National Guard at the time of the theft. Gooden later sold the stolen guns to people in Stockton.

The guns were recovered by the agents of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives in an undercover operation.

Castro was sentenced to 20 months in prison on Feb. 25, 2013 for his part in the theft.
