STOCKTON–

The man accused of beating a 2-year-old girl to death and injuring the girl’s 3-year-old sister did not enter a plea during his arraignment in a Stockton courtroom Friday.

Police say that 24-year-old Miguel Flores brought the girl to the emergency room at a local hospital with injuries to her body. Special child abuse detectives were called in and eventually determined girl died of blunt force trauma to her body.

“Whenever you have an adult killing a small child, that is obviously very horrific, very tragic,” said Stockton Police spokesperson Joe Silva.

Flores apparently lived with the victim’s mother and perhaps was babysitting. Silva says the investigation is not finished with the arrest. Family members and neighbors will be interviewed to see if there was a history of abusing the children.

Florex remained stoic as judge Franklin Stephenson read the charges: child abuse leading to the death of a child under 8-years-old, and child abuse and child endangerment pertaining to the 3-year-old.  He was in violation of probation on a DUI charge involving alcohol or drugs.  The penalty for the most serious charge carries a 25 year to life sentence.

Flores was appointed a public defender and his arraignment was continued for a week.

A dozen and half people were in the courtroom for the arraignment, some of them moved to tears. Several were distraught and crying as they left. None admitted knowing Flores when asked by FOX40 News, but they left with an attorney who had asked the judge to make sure he was appointed a public defender.

Bail was set at $1.1 million.
