PHOTOS: Todd McCarthy’s 10 Best Films of 2013
And from Universal Studios comes the gritty sequel Machete Kills, which despite a box office gross of just $8 million soared into the top 10 its first week in stores, bowing at No. 6 on First Alert and No. 4 on the Blu-ray Disc chart.
The film is the latest home entertainment success story for Universal Studios, which is behind four of the week’s 10 top-selling discs. The others are Riddick at No. 4, Despicable Me 2 at No. 5 and Fast & Furious 6 at No. 10.
Of the three new releases, Machete Kills fared best on Blu-ray Disc, with sales of the high-definition edition accounting for 51% of total unit sales, according to Nielsen data. Next came Captain Phillips, at 48%, followed by Instructions Not Included at a mere 18%.

On Home Media Magazine’s rental chart for the week, the No. 1 spot went to Captain Phillips, which knocked Warner’s Prisoners – about an abducted little girl and attempts by her father (Hugh Jackman) to find her – out of the top spot. Prisoners slipped to No. 3, right behind Anchor Bay Entertainment’s Lee Daniels’ The Butler, which held firm at No. 2 its second week in stores.
Instructions Not Included debuted at No. 7, one spot behind another new release, Woody Allen’s Blue Jasmine, from Sony Pictures, which stars Cate Blanchett and Alec Baldwin and earned $33.2 million at U.S. theaters.
Blue Jasmine debuted at No. 11 on the First Alert sales chart and No. 13 on the Blu-ray Disc sales chart.
