NEW YORK — Broadway has been bereft of tap-dancing sailors since the most recent Tony-winning revival of Anything Goes closed last summer. But that situation will be remedied with a new production of Dames at Sea, aiming to dock in 2014.
A long-running off-Broadway hit from 1968, the show is a celebration of the vintage movie musical. It helped launch the career of Broadway veteran Bernadette Peters in its original production, which was notable in that it employed a cast of just six to affectionately parody the golden age of lavish Hollywood musicals.
With a book and lyrics by George Haimsohn and Robin Miller, and music by Jim Wise, the 1930s-set musical follows starry-eyed Ruby as she steps off the bus from Utah and into a Broadway show just hours before learning that the theater is to be demolished. With the help of some friendly sailors, Ruby and her fellow cast hatch a plan to perform the show on a naval battleship.
Presented for the first time on Broadway, the new production of Dames at Sea will be directed and choreographed by Randy Skinner, a Tony nominee for his work on 42nd Street and White Christmas. Infinity Theatre Company and Perry Street Theatricals are producing.
Cast, design team, dates and venue are to be announced.
