HBO has a full-length trailer for Ryan Murphy‘s The Normal Heart, which will air ahead of Sunday’s Game of Thrones.
The Normal Heart, written by Larry Kramer, who won a Tony for his 1985 play of the same name, explores the onset of the HIV/AIDS crisis in New York in the early 1980s, including the struggles faced by gay activists and their allies in the medical community to expose the truth to a city in denial.

The new footage opens with an innocent summer party in 1981, before Craig Donner (Jonathan Groff) suddenly falls ill during a beachside game of catch. “I’ve never seen or heard of anything like this,” Dr. Emma Brookner (Julia Roberts) observes. “This only seems to be happening to gay men.” There are glimpses of Ned Weeks (Mark Ruffalo) appearing on television accusing the government of “a conspiracy to murder all gay men,” being detained as he pleads with the mayor for help and Bruce Niles (Taylor Kitsch) telling Ned some harsh truths.

The Normal Heart debuts May 25 at 9 p.m. on HBO.
