Hi, due to several defects, many have chosen to send back the nexus 5 to receive a new one. infa89, a member of an Italian forum, had the following defects:
dancers and noisy buttons
SIM tray protruding
"cutting edge" display frame.

Comparing the old with the new phone, he noticed several differences, as you can see in the picture.

The new one has none of the above defects, it has
fixed buttons
larger microphone and speaker holes

more yellow display
green stuck pixels.

Someone else has noticed differences between his nexus and replaced one?

You know just yesterday I was looking at the speaker holes thinking they are probably too small to let the sound out easily.

RMA? Because of buzzy sound?

Edit...Yeah my buttons are fine too, and it's a 311

Oddly I have the tight fitting buttons, but the speaker/mic grille look to be the smaller ones.

I have a 311k btw

By rattling buttons, you mean if you just shake the phone? Because mine rattle a little, but its not a problem. No backlight bleed or small holes though.

I have the larger speaker holes from the 16GB I purchased from Best Buy for Sprint but the original 32GB I ordered on the Play Store had the smaller holes. However, the volume on this new handset is much much worse. :(

I have no evidence to back this, but the couple I've seen from carriers all seem to be defect free while the ones from Google play seem to have issues. Esp the white ones. Just throwing out a random thought

I feel lucky now...got mine from play and it has the larger holes. I've been very pleased with everything...I did have a panic attack earlier when I dropped my phone and suddenly the vibrator stopped working...took my case off and heard a snap...I guess the cover came off or something? But now its working fine...

Only thing I noticed as far as defects is slight light bleeding on the edge of the screen in the corner. But I'm not anal enough to care...its only noticabke when the screen is black at night...

OMG, i love this joke.
I'm not even kidding. It has been a running gag for months in my environment.

But back to the topic:
It wouldn't be surprised by updated "outer hardware" as the Nexus 4 also got updated with these "gummish-spike-thingies" on its back against slipping.

    You guys are dumb, I mean, seriously. 310, 311, 312 and so on are the FREAKING MONTHS when the device was manufactured! They are NOT new versions!

    Look, let me explain it very slow so you can follow:

    Year = 2013
    Month = October (10), November (11), December (12)
    Place = Korea (K)

    So, how would you create a S/N for a device manufactured on 2013/10 in Korea?

    I don't know, but my guess would be 310K, but wait! October's over!
    Now comes November!!!
    WHAT CAN WE DO?
    Oh wait... 311K seems to do the trick! YAY! We have another month!
    But, November's over too! Crap, now we need to come up with something... any ideas? Yes, you got it: 312K

    Now here comes the tricky part, can you all guess what January's code will be? :confused:

    /sarcasm

    Now seriously, stop sending back your good devices just to get a device that the only difference was that it was manufactured a month later. If your device is faulty, by all means, send it back to get a good one, but sending a good device just to get "A NEW VERSION" that isn't really a new version, just manufactured a month later is just dumb and sad.

    tl/dr: until someone shows me a new HW VER version (different from my rev_11) I don't believe there's a new version just because of 3 pics. And EVEN if there is indeed a new version that's no reason to send a device back if your device is working fine.

    Honestly. Mine is a 311 model and I have no issues whatsoever. All this RMA is doing is going to raise the cost of the manufacturer. Which could eventually mean higher future nexus devices. Just my thoughts. Now if its screen problems that's different. But RMA for a smaller speaker hole ......

    Hi

    any engineers out there got an idea of why this happens?

    How can a subsequent batch start coming with inferior screens? Have google really cut every possible corner with awful quality control??

    Bit depressing!

    Could be different manufacturers for the LCD Panel, so there are a mixture of types, or a different revision of the panel using LEDs that have a different colour temperature. If the panels are different then calibration data should be stored in the ROM to ensure the displays are adjusted for the matching white balance. It might be the case this hasn't made it into the firmware or boot loader yet and at some point it is corrected.

    It might even be the case that LG have a calibration machine that itself is calibrated badly so panels that go via that machine come out too yellow.

    It should be noted that the Nexus 5 will look yellow when compared against the Nexus 4. The Nexus 4 is very cold (blue). If you look at the Nexus 5 with a white screen for a few minutes, then switch to the Nexus 4, you immediately think, ah the Nexus 4 is too blue. If you look at the Nexus 4 for a few minutes then go back to the Nexus 5, it immediately looks like the Nexus 5 is in the wrong and too yellow. Our eyes "auto white balance". Problem is we are conditioned that a bluish white is a whiter white. For example paper often has a blue die added to make it look whiter, and washing power has blue specs of die in it for the same reason.

    The Nexus 5 is however a much truer white.

    Anandtech also shows this to be the case in their measurements, see the chart here http://www.anandtech.com/show/7517/google-nexus-5-review/5. The Nexus 4 is the bluest of all the phones tested, the Nexus 5 is closer to the ideal colour temperature and so appears way down the chart. Most phones go for a whiter white, the Nexus 5 is simply more honest and true.

    It does seem that people are reporting a difference also between Nexus 5's when compared together with one being much yellower, so I suspect we have two types of complaint, one is a well adjust Nexus 5 compared to something like a Nexus 4, and then Nexus 5s that are actually badly calibrated for some reason and are actually yellow even when compared to another Nexus 5.

    Regards

    Phil
