Sacramento’s city clerk is reminding voters, even when the verification of signatures process ends on a petition to force a vote on the new downtown arena, the validity of the petition still needs to be approved.

“It is anticipated that the Sacramento County Registrar of Voters will reach the 22,000 signature verification threshold today. In my role as the City’s Elections Official, I feel compelled to remind the community that simply reaching this threshold does not conclude the petition validation process,” Shirley Concolino, Sacramento City Clerk said.

Sacramento County had been asked to tally and verify the signatures on the petition, and must do so by January 28. After the minimum threshold is met to allow the petition to move forward, it can still be rejected on other grounds.

“The City Clerk has the responsibility and sole authority to accept or reject petitions per the CA Election Code and the Sacramento City Charter,” Concolino stated in a press release Friday.

The4000, the group behind the efforts for a new downtown arena, has filed a claim saying different versions of the petition were circulated for signatures.

The group who collected the signatures, STOP, brushed off the allegations and said they are confidant.
