The Americans returned to FX for its second season on Wednesday night, shedding 41 percent from its 2013 series premiere.
At 10 p.m., the sophomore debut averaged 1.9 million viewers and 863,000 adults 18-49. Both figures mark a sharp drop from the show’s launch last January, though they are relatively on par with the freshman same-day averages (1.85 million viewers, 882,000 adults 18-49.)
The Americans enjoyed a solid series premiere in 2013, with 3.22 million viewers, but it proved to be a bigger draw on DVR. Same-day viewership took a dip in subsequent episodes, eventually landing at 1.74 million with the May finale. Overall viewership saw the series average 3.38 million viewers in live-plus-7 — 1.7 million of them adults 18-49. Time-shifting nearly doubled its demo haul.
Wednesday’s numbers are fair for FX but dwarfed by fellow originals American Horror Story: Coven and Sons of Anarchy. The network’s top two series also rank among the most-watched on all of cable.
Facing off against The Americans was big broadcast competition in NBC’s Chicago P.D., which hit a series high, and a special hour for CBS’ Criminal Minds.
