[Warning: Major spoilers from Tuesday’s episode.]
The Originals said goodbye to a major character.
But because deaths on The CW supernatural drama sometimes don’t stick, questions naturally surrounded the demise of witch Sophie Devereaux (Daniella Pineda) at the end of Tuesday’s episode, “Crescent City.” But executive producer/showrunner Julie Plec made sure to point out that this time, Sophie has bitten the dust.

“I think in this particular case, the witches have taken their vengeance on a non-believer. I don’t think there’s much of a hope for her to recover given that more often than not you need witch intervention to have a second chance at life. I think that this may be the end of Miss Sophie,” Plec said.
When the writers first arced out the Harvest, Sophie’s demise wasn’t part of the original plan.
“We didn’t know the specifics of it. We knew there would have to be a pretty horrible, hideous consequence. A lot of Sophie at first [was] to lead the witch revolution; she kept coming against the wall and failing and didn’t — when all is said and done — have the right faith in herself to carry it out,” Plec elaborated. “When we realized the ultimate consequence of that would be death, that’s when we made the decision to go down that road.”
With Klaus (Joseph Morgan) and Rebekah (Claire Holt) out of commission thanks, Plec hinted that the next episode would take place outside of the French Quarter.
“We put Rebekah and Klaus into a trapped situation in a creepy, horrible, messed-up sanatorium from back in the day,” Plec revealed. “Genevieve basically, working between the two of them, enacts her revenge. We’ll learn why her revenge is so specifically targeted toward Rebekah — and what exactly she’s going to do to make Rebekah suffer as much as possible.” That episode will also feature flashbacks to 1919, when New Orleans was going through the end of the influenza epidemic.

Though the Original family won’t have to seek shelter outside of New Orleans — at least, not yet — Plec said that they “are under attack.”
“The resurrected witches have a mission and it’s personal,” she said. “They get as close to succeeding in tearing apart this family as possibly we’ve ever seen and the outcome of what it is the witches do to our Original family will have eternal repercussions for their dynamic.”
The Hollywood Reporter highlights eight notable developments from the episode, and the aftermath.
1. Will Elijah feel his family’s wrath after picking Hayley over blood?
“There’s a guilt attached to that, there’s a shame attached to that, there’s a logic attached to it of course. When in doubt, save the baby. But it definitely drives him very hard to rescue his siblings in the next episode and to try to pull the family back together as it’s under assault,” Plec said. (And for what it’s worth, Hayley’s pregnancy will continue to play out this season.)
2. Is Monique Devereaux a villain going forward?
After killing her aunt Sophie at the end of the hour, the young witch reunited with the others — bringing up a larger question: Is she bad? “You have to look at her as a villain and as a victim,” Plec said. “She was in this limbo state with, what seems, direct access to angry witches who are very, very, very unflinching in their faith and their own abilities and their own people. Either she’s a zealot who’s just a product of her own environment or she’s a little bit kooky. She’s probably a little bit of both.”
3. Will the Crescent wolves return?
“It’s a full moon in this particular episode and there won’t be a full moon for a few more episodes, and this is our first taste of the Crescent wolves,” Plec said, adding that she hopes that the characters will be back at some point later in the season.
4. Will the Caroline and Klaus hookup have ramifications?
“Klaus made a promise that he wouldn’t return [to Mystic Falls], Caroline was very clear she’s got other plans. She’s got some stuff she’s got to deal with, he’s got some stuff he’s got to deal with. The plans to cross paths with them right now don’t seem very realistic but that doesn’t mean in life there aren’t opportunities,” Plec said. Their hookup in the woods in The Vampire Diaries 100th episode served the purpose of closing out a storyline that “had been left dangling and to get those characters to a new place with each other.”
5. Is it just a fight between vampires and witches?
Not so. As Plec told it, expect the werewolves to come into play again around episode 18. “The werewolves are much closer to the front of the line as the other supernatural factions are trying to figure out their way with each other in the Quarter, suddenly there are werewolves to be reckoned with as well,” she said.
6. Is Father Kieran on the mend?
Now that he’s been hexed by witches, Father Kieran has a long road ahead to recovery. “It’s not going to be an easy thing to overcome,” Plec said. “Sometimes you wonder what’s reversible and what isn’t.”
7. How does Elijah feel about Hayley’s emotions toward her “future husband” Jackson?
I don’t think he’s going to be very happy about it,” Plec said. “Just this idea of her attention following towards these people and her sense of family unity and family bond drawing towards them and away from the Originals is a lot for Elijah to handle. Ultimately, if he’s ever able to stand face to face with Jackson, he might be like, ‘Wait a second, who’s this guy? Not so sure I like this guy!’ “
8. Is Thierry gone for good?
Last viewers saw of him, he and a group of vampires left under Klaus’ watch to form their own band of merry misfits. Plec revealed that he will return, though it won’t be a few more episodes. “He’s now living on the outskirts and he might come in handy to one of our characters some day soon,” Plec said.
The Originals returns Feb. 25 on The CW.
