MADRID — Spanish producer Enrique Cerezo announced he will donate 1 percent of box office profits from his widely popular Witching and Bitching, directed by Alex de la Iglesia, to support youth sports in Spain.
Cerezo, who is also president of the professional soccer team Atletico de Madrid, signed an agreement with the president of the Superior Council of Sports, Miguel Cardenal, pledging 1 percent of proceeds from the film.
Witching, which ran in the Official Section and the San Sebastian International Film Festival and sits atop the Spanish box office, scored €1.24 million in its opening weekend, which translates to €12,000 for the Sports Council. The maximum scholarship granted by the council amounts to €60,000.
“This idea came about thanks to a film that fortunately opened very well,” Cerezo said at the signing. “It’s a good initiative, and I hope that it is the first of many others, since the goal of sponsoring scholarships is a good one.”
