MODESTO –

Modesto maintenance worker Kirk Lund was shot and killed Thursday morning at the Leonard Avenue apartment complex he worked in.

Modesto Police arrested twenty-four-year-old Joshua Stewart on Thursday morning two blocks away near the Coldwell Avenue and Tully Road intersection in connection with the shooting.

They believe Stewart shot the 55-year-old Lund, then threw his gun on top of a liquor store. The gun was later retrieved.

Modesto residents on Leonard avenue say Lund was the nicest man.

“He was just very friendly, he would talk to everybody around here. Everybody knew him,” said Shawna Insco.

They said he was more than a maintenance man. In addition to giving residents his hand when their homes needed repairs, he also gave them his heart.

“One of the people behind us had their electricity turned off and he let them borrow the money to turn it back on,” said Insco.

Neighbors don’t know a motive and neither do Modesto police officers.

“Detectives are investigating this incident as we speak. Any relationship, motives for this shooting remain under investigation at this point,” said Lt. Brian Findlen.

Neighbors were outraged by the shooting. A woman who did not want to be identified had a message for the person accused of killing Lund.

“To be honest: rot in hell. I can’t cuss on TV but I can say this: rot in hell,” she said.
