March 2014 sees the 20th anniversary of the release of Hellboy: Seed of Destruction #1, the first solo release starring Mike Mignola‘s demon hunting curmudgeon — and to celebrate, publisher Dark Horse Comics has declared Saturday, March 22, 2014, “Hellboy Day.”
To mark the event, the publisher is offering discounts to retailers on the Hellboy and spin-off series BPRD backlists, as well as releasing an all new Hellboy sampler, featuring two favorite Mignola stories (“The Ghoul” and “Another Day at the Office”) alongside new material from the creator, Brazilian writer/artist Fabio Moon, and New Yorker contributor Robert Sikoryak.

Earlier that week, on March 19, the publisher will release 20 Years of Hellboy, a hardcover collection of material selected by Mignola from the first two decades of his character’s fictional life, including the first drawing ever made of the character. (Although, judging from the promotional image sent out by Dark Horse, the official title may be Hellboy: The First 20 Years.)
Mignola will make an appearance in Hollywood’s Meltdown Comics and Collectibles store during the day, with details about the event to be released closer to the date. Other comic store retailers are being invited to participate in the celebrations in some way, with the publisher promising “events happening in comic shops around the country” on the day itself.
