Reliance recently partnered on a distribution deal with Viacom18 India for its sports drama Bhaag Milkha Bhaag. As a leading Bollywood banner, Reliance’s credits include hits like Don 2, Talaash, Bodyguard, Ghajini and 3 Idiots, the highest grossing Hindi film of all time. Internationally 3 Idiots set a record, grossing over $25 million of which $10 million was from non-traditional markets like Hong Kong, Taiwan, South Korea and Japan. In the last four years, Reliance Entertainment has expanded its international distribution of Bollywood films to 85 countries.
Established by the late Yash Johar in 1976, Dharma Productions is one of Bollywood’s well-known banners with a string of hits to its credit including Karan Johar‘s 1998 directorial debut Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (Heartbeats), starring Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol.
“The collaboration should break new ground in overseas markets and expand the reputation of both companies internationally,” said Reliance Entertainment COO Mahesh Ramnathan.
“We are very excited about having Reliance Entertainment as our overseas distribution partner for our next four releases,” said Dharma Productions CEO Apoorva Mehta. “Our strength in content creation matched by their distribution expertise will ensure that the films have the widest possible reach in traditional and non-traditional markets.”
