James Cameron has opened up about what to expect from the upcoming Avatar sequels, saying that fans of the series will discover “a lot of new imagery and a lot of her environments and creatures across Pandora” in the three upcoming sequels to his 2009 science fiction epic.
“At first I thought I was going to take it onto other worlds as well, in the same solar system, but it turned out not to be necessary,” the director told the Associated Press. “I mean, the Pandora that we have imagined will be a fantasyland that is going to occupy people for decades to come, the way I see it.”

He continued, “There’s a fair bit of underwater stuff. It’s been inaccurately said that the second film takes place underwater. That’s not true. There are underwater scenes and surface-water scenes having to do with indigenous ocean cultures that are distributed across the three films.”
The first Avatar movie, Cameron explained, was “very Jake-centric,” referring to the character played by Sam Worthington, but the new series as a whole is “really the story of his family, the family that he creates on Pandora. His extended family. So think of it as a family saga like The Godfather.”
Cameron will be directing each of the three sequels to the original film, all of which will be shot in New Zealand. The first of the sequels is expected to be released in 2016.
