Death Cab for Cutie is working on its eighth studio album and first full-length since 2011’s Codes and Keys.
The veteran alt-rock group teased the studio return on Instagram on Thursday (Oct. 10) by photographing a row of guitars and adding the caption, “Paintbrushes. #inthestudio #deathcab.” A source confirms to Billboard that Ben Gibbard and company are indeed plowing ahead with a new studio album.
STORY: Postal Service’s ‘Give Up’ Goes Platinum
Earlier this year, Gibbard and Jimmy Tamborello revived their popular side project the Postal Service for a world tour coinciding with a 10th anniversary reissue of the duo’s lone album, 2003’s Give Up. The Postal Service played its last show in August at the Metro in Chicago following its headlining set at Lollapalooza.
Following the May 2011 release of Codes and Keys (279,000 copies sold, according to Nielsen SoundScan), Gibbard issued his debut solo album, Former Lives, in October 2012. Last month, Death Cab for Cutie performed its 2003 breakout album Transatlanticism in its entirety at Seattle’s Bumbershoot festival.
