LODI—

A five-car crash in Lodi has claimed the lives of five people, including a pregnant woman and her unborn baby, Lodi Police say.

According to a release from the police department, the accident happened near Ham Lane and Vine Street around 5:21 p.m. Authorities soon found that five cars were involved in the accident.

Onlookers told FOX40 that an SUV was speeding at nearly 90 mph just before the crash. A pickup bent into a u-shape at the scene is indicative of the forces experienced in the crash.

Police note that five people have died as a result of the crash. AMR representatives told FOX40 that they dealt with a total of 13 patients at the scene. It’s unclear how many patients had to be taken to the hospital, but at least one victim was life flighted to the UC Davis Medical Center.

Other victims were taken to Lodi Memorial (which is, coincidentally, right next to where the accident happened) and Kaiser South in Sacramento. Three victims of the accident were said to be currently in surgery as of Tuesday night, Lodi Police said.

A young child also died in the accident, according to police.

Authorities are talking to the many witnesses at the scene at the time of the crash. Police note that it is too early to determine what exactly is responsible for the crash.
