TORONTO – Canada’s CBC network has bagged a Sochi Olympics audience in Toledo, Ohio.
Buckeye CableSystem began offering the Canadian pubcaster’s broadcast of the Winter Games after a dispute with NBC‘s Toledo affiliate blocked its access to the U.S. network’s exclusive U.S. coverage from Sochi.
And the CBC, while also grabbing retransmission royalties from Buckeye, also earned a 30-second YouTube tribute from Toledo TV viewers thanking them for the cross-border Olympic coverage, via CBET Windsor.
“CBC, we’ll turn our sets to thee,” local viewers sing in the commercial, set to the tune of “O Canada,” the Canadian national anthem.
“We’re flattered. It says a lot about CBC’s best-in-class reputation that we’ve earned over many Olympic Games,” said Chuck Thompson, a CBC spokesman, on Friday.
Buckeye used a retransmission exemption under U.S. copyright legislation to tap the CBC feed, which provides 13 hours of Sochi coverage a day, and over 190 hours in all until February 23.
