SACRAMENTO-

While light rail looked a little light this week, come Tuesday, all that will change as construction on Highway 50 begins.

Regional Transit expects ridership will increase by 13 percent.

For now, RT has scheduled 6 additional trips along their blue and gold lines.

“Adding additional lines will actually help because it will be less congestion, but at the same time a lot less people are going to be on the roads because of traffic,” commuter Tara Stratton said.

The length of trains will also increase from 2 to 4 cars to carry additional riders.

“I do not think it will get crowded on this line, but the one that runs along Folsom Boulevard will be packed,” another commuter Mark Solam said.

While some think commuters along Highway 50 will be most impacted, RT expects greater delays along their Highway 99 and I-80 routes.

“We do not know where that additional demand is going to come, so I want to be flexible. I actually have additional possibilities that will respond as ridership changes,” Regional Transit General Member Mike Wiley said.

RT is also adding nine more buses for their daily commuters.

“So as a route gets delayed or over crowded we will be able to put a bus there very quickly because we will already have a bus out in the service area waiting to fill in,” Wiley said.

They will update riders about parking availability at their various “Park and Ride” locations.
