NPR/Time: New CEO at Microsoft source of pride for Indian Americans, or is he?

Satya NadellaDepending on who you talk to, Satya Nadella is reason to celebrate or new big deal to the Indian American community, reports NPR

The new CEO of Microsoft is a  first generation Indian immigrant.

“The question is how well can you do,” said Sunil Kumar, Dean of the Booth School of Business School at the University of Chicago where Nadella received his MBA. “Satya will establish there really is no limit.”

One Silicon Valley Indian American investor says he will use Nadella’s example as an inspiration for his own children, but Indian Americans at a local coffee shop were less excited.

They have seen other Indian Americans rise to the tops of their fields in Fortune 500 companies, Hollywood, even politics.

“The ceiling is already broken in the technology sector,” said one Indian American who has worked with Nadella in the past.
“In that sense, this is not distinctive news. There’s no special pride,”

Ishaan Tharoor in a piece for Time Magazine wrote “Indian Americans don’t need Satya Nadella — the Hyderabad-born techie named Microsoft’s CEO  — to feel good about themselves. Look around the U.S. and you already see “desis” in leading positions.”

You can read more of Tharoor’s thoughts in Time  and hear other reaction in the piece from NPR below.
