Wednesday’s late-breaking news on the possibility of a development in the search for missing Malaysia Airlines flight 370 produced little new information — but it did continue to drive strong ratings on the cable news networks.
Fox News Channel, also devoting much coverage to the ongoing situation in Ukraine, scored more wins among total viewers and adults 25-54. And with its more-is-more approach to the Malaysia story, CNN again delivered a competitive second place. Interest in the aviation mystery has pushed MSNBC out of runner-up status for two weeks running.
STORY: Malaysia Airlines Flight Prompts Ratings Rise for Some — Despite Few Developments
The gap in total viewers remains wide, distinctly in Fox’s favor, but the demo averages are tighter for the first four days of the week. Heading into Friday, FNC is ahead of CNN by 70,000 viewers in the key adults demo with 391,000 viewers.
CNN actually clocked a demo win during Thursday’s 9 p.m. hour with coverage of Malaysia Airlines driving exiting Piers Morgan Tonight (hosted by Bill Weir) to 373,000 adults 25-54. That bested Megyn Kelly‘s typically dominant showing on FNC by 20,000 viewers.
Those highs did not extend to the 10 p.m. hour. The third episode of docuseries Chicagoland brought in 172,000 viewers in the key demo to CNN, despite its lofty lead-in. Chicagoland still beat MSNBC’s Lawrence O’Donnell (136,000 adults 25-54) but fell quite shy of Sean Hannity‘s 331,000 demo viewers.
