One of the hallmarks of a thriving democracy is a vibrant and engaged body of citizens freely speaking their minds.
In recent months, the number of comments attached to stories posted on this site have greatly increased. This is a good signal of civic engagement in our corner of the world.
Longtime readers of this site know the rules for posting comments - No vulgar language or personal attacks please. If you use it or do it, it will be removed. Civility first.
In all but a few rare cases, commentators have complied with these guideline and we thank you.
Unlike other sites, we allow comments posted as anonymous or under a pseudonym as long as those guidelines are followed. A number of readers tell us they appreciate that feature for a variety of reasons.
Having said that, there is one other guideline we would like our readers to observe - use of an actual person's name that is not your own.
Last evening there was a comment posted under an actual person's name that would by all measures be contrary to that particular person. After being contacted by that person and verifying that person DID NOT post the comment, it was removed.
Please feel free to comment under your name, anonymously or a pseudonym, but please do not commit this type of identity theft.
One last note - we encourage debate and civility. Today there was a comment posted that could be construed as racially insensitive. Upon review, we believe it to be a form of sarcasm.
Nonetheless, let's all think twice if your comments would be construed as something other than sarcasm.

I don't know where else to post this comment, so I'll put it here under the "civility" topic. Seems appropriate.
I watched last night's council meeting and I must say that I was impressed with Mr. Detrick's civility last night. After months of rather poor manners and self-serving comments, he actually acted like the "candidate" I voted for.
He listened, was respectful, even to the point of lauding Lynn Wheat's comments regarding acknowledgement of the trails committee. Very refreshing and unexpected. More of the same would be appreciated and set a good example for the mayor.
