Parenthood’s John Corbett is returning to FX.
More than 10 years after he starred in the cable network’s Lucky, the Parenthood and Sex and the City alum has booked the co-starring role in the network’s Denis Leary comedy pilot Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
Written, produced and starring Leary, the comedy centers on Johnny Rock (Leary), a middle-aged rock ‘n’ roller who desperately wanted to be rich and famous. So far, he’s 0-for-2. As the talented lead singer of New York’s legendary early 1990s band The Heathens, Johnny was on his way to the cover of Rolling Stone magazine. His best friend Flash was being called the next No. 1 lead guitar player on Earth. The critics loved them. Their live shows were selling out. But Johnny had a problem with booze. And coke. And weed. And pills. And cough medicine. And he slept with Flash’s wife as well as his bass player’s fiancee. The band broke up the same day their first and only record was released. Twenty-five years later, Johnny is now trying to get the band back together because his soon-to-be-ex-manager Ira tells him he’s a broke, anonymous bartender.
Corbett will co-star as Flash, the much-acclaimed former lead guitarist of The Heathens. He formed the band with Johnny and were in the vein of Mick Jagger and Keith Richards or Steven Tyler and Joe Perry — only without the money, fame and the ability to stay in the same room together for more than five minutes without wanting to kill each another. Flash has found some fame as a much respected session player and occasional guitarist for Lady Gaga.
The gig comes after Corbett had a recurring role on NBC’s Parenthood, where his character is a struggling guitar player/singer. (The actor started playing guitar as a child.) The casting continues Corbett’s relationship with FX, where he starred in the short-lived poker comedy Lucky. Corbett’s credits also include his co-starring role on Showtime’s United States of Tara, The Visitor and Northern Exposure, among others. He recently completed production on the feature The Boy Next Door, opposite Jennifer Lopez. He’s repped by Gersh and Lovett Management.
Leary’s Apostle banner partner Jim Serpico will executive produce the FX Productions and Fox Television Studios comedy, which will be filmed on location in the spring in New York City. The project will feature original music and occasional guest appearances by rock stars, FX said.
