Emirates 24/7: New Miss America Embraces Diversity

Davuluri Wears Miss America Crown ProudlyNina Davuluri knows an historical moment when she sees it.

Running on a platform of embracing diversity, the Indian American just crowned Miss America 2014 doesn’t run away from her heritage.

It came down between two Asian Americans for the title.

Crystal Lee, a Chinese American from San Francisco and a former Miss Chinatown, and Davaluri, stood on stage waiting for host Lara Spencer to announce who would get to walk down the runway as the new Miss America.

Asked how she felt right before the winner was announced, Davaluri promptly replied:

“We’re both so proud. We’re making history right here, standing here as Asian Americans.”

After the pageant she faced a bevy of reporters and again acknowledged her Indian American heritage.

“I’m so happy this organization has embraced diversity.” Emirates 24/7 quoted her as saying.  “I’m thankful there are children watching at home who can finally relate to a new Miss America.”

Davaluri did not let a barrage of racial tweets about her victory ruin her celebratory mood.

“I have to rise above that,” Time reported her saying.  “I always viewed myself as first and foremost American.”
