California Highway Patrol has identified the couple at the center of a tragic incident being blamed on DUI.

Donald, 79, and Valerie Hendrickson, 76, were said to have been crossing Fair Oaks Boulevard, just south of Kenneth Avenue, around 5:12 p.m. Sunday when a man driving a Toyota Camry turned onto southbound Fair Oaks.

That driver, identified as 55-year-old Carmichael resident James Carroll, apparently didn’t see the couple and hit them.

Both Donald and Valerie suffered major injuries to the head and had to be taken to Mercy San Juan Hospital. Donald later died from his injuries. Valerie’s condition has not been released.

Authorities found that Carroll was driving drunk at the time of the crash. Hew was arrested and charged with gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and felony DUI.

CHP notes that the incident is still under investigation.
