DC Entertainment will reveal the possible future of its superheroes this September with a month of special issues that push each of the publisher’s ongoing series five years forward in their fictional timelines.
The jump forward will tie in with The New 52: Futures End, a weekly series launching in May that will take place in multiple time frames (including one five years ahead of the current day), although DC co-publisher Dan DiDio said that fans won’t have to read that series to understand each of the September issues.
STORY: DC’s ‘Futures End’ to Begin in 2014
“These stories aren’t going to just be tied into the weekly,” he explained to Newsarama.com. “What you’ll be seeing is a lot of the writers who are working on series right now projecting forward their ideas, their storylines and where they think their character might be five years from now.”
The event will mark the third anniversary of DC’s New 52 relaunch of its entire superhero line, as well as the third line wide “event” month since the relaunch, following September 2012’s “Zero Issue” month of flashback stories and September 2013’s “Villain’s Month,” which saw comics headlined by the bad guys replacing the regular line for the month.
This year’s event will also serve as a starting point for a third weekly series from the publisher, which will kick off in October. The new series “will be set in the current DCU timeline and will have direct implications on what’s happening with the ‘five years later’ storyline,” DiDio said, going on to describe the new series as being “more world-building” in focus than simply featuring one single character, a la the already announced Batman: Eternal weekly.
