Fargo launched on FX Tuesday night, pulling in 2.65 million viewers for its first episode.
Dubbed a mini, the twist on Joel and Ethan Coen‘s Oscar-winning film of the same name has been an internal favorite at the cable network. Fargo also fetched 1 million viewers in the adults 18-49 demographic.
The show performed much better with the whole night taken into account. Three plays of Fargo took in 4.15 million viewers and 1.8 million in the demo.
For a quick comparison, FX’s recent premieres (the second season of recently renewed The Americans and the fifth run of Justified) averaged a respective 1.9 and 2.8 million viewers.
FX, like all cable networks, has seen particular growth with time-shifting. The recent Americans return, while outwardly soft, jumped 81 percent in the key demo after just three days of DVR use.
Technically billed as a miniseries, there has already been talk of keeping Fargo alive when the current run is over. “I said it was a 10-hour movie,” showrunner Noah Hawley told The Hollywood Reporter. “It’s an anthology. If you did a second 10-hour movie, it would be a completely new story from the Coen brothers universe.”
