Joseph Gordon-Levitt may have been announced as a producer on a future movie adaptation of Neil Gaiman‘s Sandman comic series, but as he explained in a recent interview, any attempt to discover just what that movie will be like may be a little premature.
“It’s still very early,” he told IGN about the movie during a promotional appearance for his new HitRecord on TV project, citing the basic mythology of the series — seven personifications of concepts such as “dream,” “desire” and “despair” as entities that exist throughout the universe and interact with the rest of us, even without our knowledge — as “a fascinating and, I think, a really cinematic concept” that he loved.

“I love big, spectacular movies, but oftentimes big, spectacular movies sort of get stuck in a rut,” he continued. “They go down certain paths that end in big explosions or whatever. Sandman has so much opportunity to do something that’s on a grand, grand scale, but really unlike your average big, grand-scale, spectacular movie.”
Nonetheless, he said, it’s “very, very early days” and although there’s “potential” that he might star or direct in the movie, he’s unwilling to commit to anything publicly just yet. “Yeah, nothing is cemented yet,” he said. “There’s so much potential in that material. It’s exciting.”
