The International Labour Organization’s anti-slavery campaign will co-host a Google Hangout on Tuesday where users can virtually meet the descendants of Solomon Northup, the real-life protagonist in 12 Years a Slave.
The Academy Award-winning film was based on the 19th century memoir of Northup, a free African American, who was kidnapped and taken South to a life of slavery. Tuesday’s event is timed to coincide with the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery. Hundreds of thousands of people, particularly children in developing nations, currently are held in various states of coerced labor amounting to contemporary slavery.
The ILO’s expert on modern chattel servitude, Beate Andrees, will join the discussion of contemporary forced labor, which will be moderated by Holly Young, a journalist with the Guardian.
Among the Hollywood celebrities who have participated in events related to the ILO’s ongoing anti-slavery initiative are Cher, Maria Bello, Oliver Stone, Mila Kunis and Jada Pinkett Smith, along with Brazilian musician Sergio Mendes.
