The debut trailer for X-Men: Days of Future Past scored 18.9 million YouTube views in its first week out of the gate, according to Internet monitoring service Zefr.
Those opening week numbers topped last week’s bow for the first Captain America: Winter Soldier preview, which scored 17.6 million views.
The seventh installment set in Marvel’s mutant movie universe opens in theaters May 23, 2014. Its the first to combine the cast from the original trilogy–Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Hugh Jackman–and the X-Men: First Class reboot–hello, Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy!
Captain America: Winter Soldier dropped from first to fourth. The Chris Evans starrer scored 4.9 million views to push its two-week total to 22.5 million views.
The next installment in Marvel’s Avengers series of movies (after this weekend’s Thor: The Dark World) arrives on July 4 — a patriotic debut for America’s star-spangled hero! on April 4–let’s make it a patriotic day for America’s star spangled hero!
Anticipation is high for both of Marvel’s summer 2014 blockbusters. And these two trailers did not disappoint.
Also opening strong was the third and final trailer for Hunger Games: Catching Fire, which scored 13.8 million views.
The sequel to the 2011 film also had the sixth- and seventh-most-viewed trailers (recording 1.9 and 1.8 million views, respectively). In total, the three Hunger Games: Catching Fire trailers have managed more than 80 million YouTube views.
The dystopian adventure based on the best-selling YA novels (and featuring still more Jennifer Lawrence!) opens Nov. 22.
The third spot was held by another new trailer: The Lego Movie‘s second coming attraction. The CGI story built around animated Lego minifigs and featuring the voices of Will Ferrell, Elizabeth Banks, Will Arnett and Morgan Freeman notched 7.7 million views. The new trailer offered a much better sense of the movie (it looks fun) than the first preview.
Keanu Reeves‘ newest movie, 47 Ronin, grabbed the fifth spot for its international trailer No. 4.
Also debuting in the top 10 was The Wolf of Wall Street‘s trailer No. 2. The Martin Scorsese drama starring Leonardo DiCaprio is set to open in theaters on Nov. 15.
Also making an unexpected debut in the top 10 was the extended trailer No. 1 for Mr. Peabody and Sherman, which notched 1.4 million views.
We weren’t sure the CGI adaptation of the beloved 1960s Jay Ward cartoon would be any good, but this great trailer raises hopes for the project, which arrives on screens Jan. 31.
Holding the 10th spot was the first trailer for Thor: The Dark World, which notched 1.2 million views. The second movie starring Marvel’s God of Thunder arrives in theaters tomorrow.
