Psychology Today: Katy Perry Geisha performance a form of institutional racism

Katy Perry at American Music AwardsDr. Ravi Chandra argues that Katy Perry’s recent performance as a Geisha on the American Music Awards is a form of institutional racism in that the producers of the AMAs let such a performance even take place.

He states in a blog for Psychology Today that her appearance on the AMAs is just another example of Perry’s obsession with Japanese culture.

He points to an episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live in which she states “‘I am obsessed with Japanese people. I love everything about them and they are so wonderful as human beings. I’m so obsessed I want to skin you and wear you like Versace,’

You can read other examples and a fuller explanation of how Chandra equates this whole controversy to institutional racism in Psychology Today.

Then the 18 Mighty Mountain Warriors add a little levity to the situation in this bit below.
