Ahead of the August release of Guardians of the Galaxy in theaters, Marvel Entertainment continues to add to the comic book presence of the franchise with the revelation that July will see the addition of two more related titles in addition to the already announced Guardians and Rocket Raccoon series.
Although the details of both titles are “classified,” solicitations for Marvel’s July releases list 100th Anniversary Special #1: Guardians of the Galaxy by Andy Lanning and Gustavo Duarte and Legendary Star Lord #1 by Sam Humphries and Paco Medina as new launches from the publisher, accompanying the Rocket Raccoon launch announced in February.

The publisher is also releasing Guardians of the Galaxy: Galaxy’s Most Wanted — a one-off issue by Will Corona Pilgrim and Andrea Di Vito centering around Rocket and Groot that also reprints a Thor comic from the 1980s featuring Guardians character Drax — and the 17th issue of the regular Guardians of the Galaxy series by Brian Michael Bendis and Ed McGuinness during the month.
In addition, a number of other series will receive “Guardians of the Galaxy Variant” covers in July, including Avengers, Fantastic Four, All-New X-Men, Captain Marvel and the surprise hit Ms. Marvel. Clearly, Marvel is hoping that the appetite for Guardians comics is going to hit fever pitch in the run-up to the movie’s release; while the publisher tends to up the presence of movie characters ahead of a major release, this is a larger push than Iron Man 3, Thor: The Dark World or Captain America: The Winter Soldier enjoyed. The question might be: Will this emphasis on the franchise continue after the movie’s premiere?
