FAIRFIELD-

A father of three was killed in what witnesses describe as a “drag race gone terribly wrong.”

At around 5:15 p.m. Sunday, Fairfield Police responded to a fatal accident at the intersection of Lopes Road and Canyon Hills Drive.

Witnesses said a car and a truck were speeding southbound along Lopes Road, when the driver of the car smashed into 31-year-old Ronald Brackett’s sedan. Brackett was making a left onto Lopes Road from Canyon Hills Drive when he was hit directly on the driver’s side.

The driver of the car suffered severe injuries and was transported to the hospital, while Brackett was pronounced dead on scene. The driver of the truck, a late model black Toyota Tundra, fled the scene.

“I was telling the other people around, ‘Come on, we’re losing him! The pulse is going!’ And then we lost him before the paramedics arrived,” Cindy Espinosa, who performed CPR on Brackett, said.

Brackett left behind three sons. 13 year-old Aron, 11 year-old Derek and a newborn, Alexander.

“To know that that boy has to grow up without his father and that all he’s going to see is pictures… it hurts,” Brackett’s ex-sister-in-law, Jana Carelock, said.

With his father’s death, the eldest son, Aron feels he needs to become the man of the house.

“Now that my dad is gone, once we move out and I’m old enough to get a job, I have to help pay bills and stuff,” Aron said. “I love you and I hope you’re watching over me right now.”

Fairfield Police are still looking for the third party involved, the driver of the black Toyota Tundra.
