Sony and AFI premiered three four-minute shorts created by alumni of the AFI Conservatory through a 4K movie-making project on Monday night at the NAB Show.
The shorts are Broken Nail, directed by Justin Tipping and photographed by Soren Hiroth; Bobby and the Samurai, directed by Thomas Hammock and photographed by Tarin Anderson; The Mother of All Inventions, helmed by Kyle Spleiss and lensed by the aforementioned Anderson.

Senior filmmaker-in-residence, cinematography at AFI Stephen Lighthill (and past president of the American Society of Cinematographers) moderated a short conversation with some of the participants.
“It was amazing how much latitude we had with the camera,” said Anderson. “We wanted to show off snow, the beach, and also do interiors as well.”
Rounding out the films in the “Sony/AFI 4K Shorts: Be Moved” program are Pinata, helmed by Melissa Hickey and lensed by Daniel Clarke; and Lady Hounds, directed by Eric Nichols and photographed by Clarke.
All five shorts will be made available on Sony’s Video Unlimited 4K download service, which is available to consumers who buy a Sony Ultra HDTV.
AFI alum and feature film producer Brian Udovich managed the Sony/AFI program. Panavision, Burbank-based post house Fotokem, and the Sony Digital Motion Picture Center on the Sony lot contributed resources to the filmmakers.
